The Theory Test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and a
hazard perception test. You need to pass both parts at the same
sitting to obtain your theory test pass certificate. You cannot
book your practical driving test until you have obtained this
certificate. The multiple-choice part of the test covers a wide
range of driving topics and to pass you must answer 43 or more
questions correctly in 57 minutes.
The test is on a computer screen, and you will be able to practice
for up to 15 minutes to get used to the system before starting the
actual test. After a break of up to 3 minutes, the hazard
perception test starts. This is also on a computer screen, and you
will be shown a tutorial on screen explaining how it works. The
test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting about one minute,
which feature various types of hazards, such as vehicles,
pedestrians and road conditions. You respond by clicking the mouse
button as soon as you see a hazard developing that might cause the
driver to take action such as change speed or direction. The pass
mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75.
In order to prepare for the
Theory Test, the DSA recommend The Highway Code, Driving
